High among the trees, a web of shiny luminous threads unfolds, a technological tangle reminiscent of a spider’s web. But Rhizome is a representation of harmonious cooperation: the term is used for the underground connections that roots make, wherein different organisms underground grow together to become one large superorganism of cooperating life forms. In a rhizome, one individual link - man, animal, plant, idea - is always part of a larger, stable network and therefore as a small link as unique as it is indispensable.
Whether it’s an underground root-system or an exchange of thoughts, information and cultures, the rhizome is a philosophical model to look at the connections we make to survive and evolve as a network in new ways.
About the artist
Tom & Lien Dekyvere
Tom & Lien Dekyvere make large technological installations in which nature and technology merge into unexpected systems. They find inspiration in complex structures from nature and science that, from galaxy size to nano dimensions, all provide inspiration for the complex supersystems with which humans populate the world.
